Saltfish Freediving offers freediving courses from beginner level all the way up to advanced level through the AIDA International certification standard.

AIDA International is a non profit organization that was founded in 1992 to further the development of freediving. Over the years AIDA International have defined disciplines in freediving and recognize and authenticate world records achieved in these disciplines.

AIDA International is made up of world class freedivers who are passionate about the sport of freediving. The AIDA International education standard is a high quality education programme that incorporates the knowledge and experience of world class freedivers, dive professionals and scientists and is recognized worldwide.

Description

Certification(s)

This course will open the first door to the wonderful world of Freediving. Here you will learn some of the fundamentals such as mental and physical relaxation, breathing techniques, equalisation of the ears along with fundamental safety practices. The course consists of a short theory session, followed by some breath holds in a shallow water session in a sheltered bay, followed an open water session to try out some of the basics Freediving skills on a line. Here you will learn what Freediving is all about, and if it is for you.

Course length: 1 day

Requirements: Be at least 18 years old, (or 16 with parent or guardian consent), and have no medical contraindications for freediving (provide medical certification).

Includes: Freediving equipment, insurance and certification.

This is also a beginner course but not only teaches you the fundamental skill set of the Freediver but also gives you a chance to spend some time practising them. Over two days with theory and in-water sessions you will learn the skill set you need to enjoy open water freediving, along with theory knowledge in the physiological changes which occur in the body, also the relaxation, breathing techniques, safety measures and equipment used.

Course length: 2 days

Requirements: Be at least 18 years old, (or 16 with parent or guardian consent), and have no medical contraindications for freediving (provide medical certification).

Includes: Freediving equipment, student’s kit, Freediving insurance for the duration of the course and possible AIDA 2 Certification.

This course is for those who have grasped and mastered the skill set and really want to unlock the door to the wonders of the deep. This course is THE start of deep freediving! Advanced Freedivers are trained to dive up to -30m. You will be able to really experience the sensations around you and within.

Much of the course will be spent building on the skills learnt in the AIDA 2 course, then learning and practicing free-fall technique, advanced Frenzel equalization techniques and training tables. Plus you will gain further knowledge in the physiology, the techniques and safety aspects and become proficient in the various different disciplines of freediving.

This course opens up a whole new world of diving and offers the first glimpse into what competitive Freedivers experience. It is also a great course to enhance your rescue and buddy skills.

Theory:

  • Buoyancy, proper weighting and free falling.
  • Physiology and equalizing, including the Frenzel technique.
  • Concept of using CO2 tables to improve CO2 tolerance and performance.
  • Advanced safety procedures.
  • Pulmonary physiology and barotrauma.
  • Mammalian Dive Response.

Practical sessions:

  • Review basic Freediving skills – diving and finning techniques.
  • Master Frenzel equalization and learn the advantages of free falling: how it enhances relaxation and safety, conserves oxygen and increases immersion times and depth.
  • Improvement of static and dynamic techniques.
  • Rescue scenarios at depth and on the surface, including self-rescue.

Students will learn how to dive to depths from 22-30m and have chance to increase their breath hold, dynamic performance and safety skills, including self rescue.

Course length: 3 days

Requirements: Be at least 18 years old (or 16 with parental or guardian consent), be able to swim at least 400m non-stop without fins; have completed AIDA level 2. Medical certification must be completed.

Includes: Any Freediving equipment required, student’s kit, and  possible AIDA 3 Certification.

AIDA 4 – Expert

Aida 4 Expert Level is the pinnacle of our Freediving program. You will learn to increase your breath hold to 3:30 minutes, your dynamic to 75m and comfortably dive down to a possible 40m depth. You will Freedive at depths below the residual volume of your lungs. This is a specialised course for deep diving and will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to take you into the deep blue, far beyond what you thought was possible!

You also learn stretching techniques, in depth knowledge of the effects and causes of nitrogen narcosis, how to optimize your nutrition and how to set up a Freediving line and buoy. With this qualification you are also permitted to assist another instructor on a course.

Includes any equipment required and possible certification.

Requirements are Aida 3 certification and form completion.

AIDA 2&3 COURSE COMBO

It is possible to do Aida 2 and then Aida 3 depending on the individual’s progress. Sometimes a student is fully ready for Aida 3, and sometimes we recommend some training sessions first to hone those skills.

Duration: 5-6 days

Requirements: Be at least 18 years old (or 16 with parental or guardian consent). Medical statement must be completed.

Includes: Any Freediving Equipment required. Insurance. Possible certification
