What Saltfish Freediving Clients and Friends Have to Say

  • At the end of the first lockdown last year I emerged from 6 weeks trapped in my flat with an eagerness to be outside like never before. With no work on the horizon I also had plenty of time on my hands. It was at this point that my good friend David Phillips, who found himself in a similar state of mind to me, got in touch to finally make good on our many late night discussions and to see if I fancied joining him in the sea for some freediving lessons. I’d always really fancied it and now was the perfect time!

I had previously snorkeled loads around the island but I had zero freediving experience. The best I could manage was a quick submersion, flap around for a bit and then back to the surface gasping for air. On my third lesson with Dave I had completed a free immersion dive (pulling myself down a rope) to 45 feet and could comfortably stay underwater for a minute at a time. Over the course of the Summer we continued our missions to some amazing spots around the island. Diving through caves in Cala Olivera, swimming through shoals of Barracuda while watching huge hunting Tuna breach the surface. We followed octopuses and photographed the amazingly rare juvenile Ribbon Fish and made friends with a very territorial Moray Eel. I loved every single minute of every single dive. The sensation of being in this new nature along with the incredible calm that each dive would create left me eager to jump straight back in every time. By the end of the Summer thanks to Dave’s incredible tutoring I was able to dive to 108 feet below the surface for dives lasting 2 and a half minutes or more. A whole new world has been opened up to me and I am completely hooked.

Dave has been a busy boy this winter honing his craft in the Dahab Blue Hole and setting up Saltfish Freediving Ibiza. He will soon be back on the island and ready to launch his new adventure. He is available for lessons across all levels, from a complete novice to an experienced scuba diver looking to ditch the tanks. He is a fully qualified instructor able to teach Aida 1,2 and 3. For anyone with an existing interest in the sea or for anyone looking for a new way to enjoy our island I really can’t recommend him enough. So get in touch and let him talk you through it. But don’t book up too much of his time, I still want to go for a swim Dave!
